"While Fashion Magazine has a single photographer-author, it's still a magazine, not a book. So it doesn't follow my usual mode of slow, solitary production. It's collaboration. The ideas for the collaboration were formulated very quickly. I was approached by the folks at the Paris office of Magnum to work on this issue late last year. I immediately said yes. I was a huge fan of the previous two editions (by Martin Parr and Bruce Gilden) and was looking for an excuse to play with fashion . I often say that when I am making a portrait, I'm not "capturing" the other person. If the photograph documents anything, it is the space between the subject and myself. Something similar is at work with Fashion Magazine. I'm not really comfortable saying I know anything about Paris or its fashion world. And I suspect that most fashionable Parisians know just as little about Minnesota. What is interesting is the space between us. My favorite example of this involves Chanel. In Paris, I photographed Karl Lagerfeld at the Grand Palais. In Minnesota, I photographed a girl with a Chanel shopping bag in front of Sally's Beauty Shop. With this magazine, I'm trying to explore the distance between those two places." Alec Soth

Had already seen it via old Soth's blog. Love the whole concept behind Magnum's fashion magazine - and especially how every time there's a new issue a hand full of fashion photographers goes on ranting documentary photographers should stick to documentary. They always seem to don't get it is NOT a "fashion" magazine. It's a "fashion magazine".

This magazine came out like a year ago, why is there a blog post now? I'd like to see more current info.

I think it would be a good idea if Magnum sacked the blog guy and hired someone with a little bit of creativity and ideas...

He can't even follow with his only idea so far: the photo of the week

Now he's posting old stuff...

John Vink is super interesting, so is Martin Parr... why don't you try to get more photogs to write, to post work in progress, for example...

Sincerely

Scott and Martn, I agree, there is not much news going on lately. Except of John Vink's entries of course, or Magnum's new nominees or Access To Life. But changes are coming along by the end of the month, hope you'll like those.
As for Soth's Fashion Magazine: Sure, it's not new but there are still people out there who don't know it and why not point it out. It's a wonderful piece of work by a wonderful photographer.

The first photograph is so classic. The woman could either be right out of a horror movie or out of an old ladies fashion show. Either way, I guess horror fits fashion and vice versa.
I haven't yet seen one of Magnum's fashion magazines but would love to see one. Unfortunately the signed copy is way to expensive for me.
Generally I am very glad to see that Magnum is walking not only the old directions of it's founding fathers but also exploring new - at least for Magnum - ways to change the way of many people who see and love photography.
