Butoh Dancer
Martine Franck

Her name is Ima Tenko and she has her own company. She came to France and met up with the "Théatre du Soleil" which is a theater company with whom I have worked since forty years! She saw my exhibition in Kyoto at the Kahitsukan Museum of Contemporary art and when a friend of mine asked if I could photograph her she said yes. In fact she came to the Ryokan where I was staying. She made up in my room and then performed in the garden much to the joy of other residents and the owner of the ryokan. She insisited that Butoh dancing is based on the transience of life and the proximity of death.

I have not seen those photos before. They are really lovely images. Human being and nature seem to be in complete and aesthetic harmony. There's a quiet and sweet sense of humor in these pictures. Is making pictures a joyful experience for you, Martine?

Martine:
Like Ian, I had not seen this work either....i too love the texture and the sensuality of the images, images the more abstract ones...in fact, i like the bond between both the dancer (images) and the dancing environment...an keen understanding that we are physically of all that surrounds, flesh to stone, bone to brance, water to breath, moss to hair....all entwined....and in many ways, the work (although in a different context) reminds me of why my wife and i love so much dance, especially modern dance...
are you familiar with the great contemporary choreographer Marie Chouinard??....from Montreal...
maybe our favorite contemporary choreographer...

hi martine
the dancing photos remind me a little of taras kuscynskyj's nudes in nature.... bodies as trees and plants..
looking at your work i feel the strongest connection with the work from ireland.. the car graveyard in dublin..
i'd love to see more from this part of the world..
the sumo snaps made me laugh.. thats alot of arse for such a small frame :ø)

something magical about the interplay of an artist with an artist...synergy in moments.

Powerful picture. "The transcience of life and the proximity of death" are there for all to see. The dancer looks ghostly - in the way ghosts are depicted in the Orient and not in the West.
