i too find this quite strange... not the workshop as such - more the way it is presented as ´take photos the parr way¨..
i have yet to read the three parts though, so i guess i need to hold judgment..

what i say to my students is this - look at as many photographers as you can while you study.. soak up books, read.. get a feel for who they are and then, when you leave collage, forget them and find your own thing.
perhaps these workshops are aimed at people discovering their love for photography... since i think someone who has developed their own way would be able to read martins work, what he´s trying to do and the technique for doing it..

I'm trying to imagine who would find such workshops helpful. I mean, aren't most of us more interested in developing our own unique eye rather than trying to copy someone else's, even someone as respected as Martin Parr? Why would I want to run all over the Isle of Wight following Parr's choices of subject matter? Wouldn't my time be better spent venturing off on my own and finding what speaks to me? Then each night--or the following morning--the class members could bring the photos they'd shot to Martin and the community for an honest critique. Wouldn't this approach better respect each photographer's individual eye and unique stage of development? Wouldn't such reviews tell us all we needed to know of Martin Parr's perspectives on photography?

Maybe I didn't understand the articles posted, but as I see it the School of Life weekend workshop described asked Martin Parr to be the puppet master and the students his puppets. Someone please tell me I'm wrong!

Just to clarify any mis-understanding. The weekend was 'A Holiday with Martin Parr', not a workshop.
