Your Magnum Edit: The Three Finalists

UPDATE: Voting has now ended for the contest. We will tally the votes and announce the results tomorrow afternoon, 21 April 2009. Thank you to everyone that participated.
_____________________________________________________________________________

The three finalists of our first photo editing contest are in. The criteria for the contest was to make an edit of 10-14 images based on the following quote:
"A man's face is his autobiography. A woman's face is her work of fiction." - Oscar Wilde.

Our panel of Magnum photographers and staff members selected the edits of Chuck Fowler, Michael Fazio and Raabia Wazir as our finalists. Now it's up to you to vote for the winner. The winner will receive an amazing set of vintage Magnum poster prints, including one signed by the legendary Elliott Erwitt.

Take a look at the edits and vote for your favorite. Voting will close at 12noon EDT, Monday April 20th 2009.

also a lot of humor!!!

Each has included fantastic, interesting images of men, but to me Michael Fazio's edit best captures the female face as a "work of fiction."

Edit one, is too literal an interpretation with a predictable rhythm but no melody.

Edit two, has interesting images that each support the thesis in a direct manner.

But, edit three, that's that brilliant edit. Seductive and indirect with a little drama.

Edit three probably is the most thought provoking and looks like it was the most cerebral, but I choose the magazine simplicity of #1 simply because I liked it more as a group. It was emotional and most of the images focused attention simply on the face. I also liked how it was a good mix of male and female.

I have to agree with Randy. #1 is the best if you look at all the photos as a whole, it has a nice balance between men and women, has more focus on the faces, and you can see a story in those faces.

Oscar Wilde's various quotes are highly entertaining, but for this particular quote, I think the cleverness of Wilde's phrasing belies its inherent sexism.

With that in mind, I think Fowler does a pretty good job of showing both the autobiographies and fictions of both men and women. And in that regard, for me, number one is the most thought provoking since it does a good job of simultaneously exploring the constructions of gender and self-image, with a brief side trip into 19th century attitudes. In the dissonance between the quote and the imaging the mind is more apt to explore the depths of these photos rather than enjoy the mere looking at any given image.

This is why I prefer the first one to the other two. Of course, on an individual basis, the photos of all three selections are very lovely and thought provoking in their own right. I just happen to prefer the editing direction the first one took with this project.
