On the occasion of the launch of 7 Days in Myanmar French edition at Magnum Photos in Paris, Magnum is excited to launch a new inspiring educational event – a Multimedia Workshop with Chien-Chi Chang.
It will take place from May 10th to 14th, 2014.

The 5-day intensive multimedia workshop is aimed at professionals and serious photography enthusiasts who aspire to improve their story telling to a higher ground by combining photographs, moving images and sound.

The participants (12 maximum) should arrive at the workshop with at least 80% of their editing materials ready i.e. photographs, audio clips, video clips, documents. The workshop focuses on video story telling skills and helps you define your own visual story telling style via multimedia.

The last day of the workshop will culminate with the launch evening event of 7 Days in Myanmar French edition at Magnum Photos in Paris in the presence of Abbas, Bruno Barbey, Chien-Chi Chang, Chris Steele-Perkins, where we will present the multimedia produced during the workshop.

The Photographer

Chien-Chi Chang - b. Taiwan 1961

Born in Taiwan in 1961, Chang studied at Soochow University and at Indiana University. Chang joined Magnum in 1995 and became a full member in 2001.
In his work, Chien-Chi Chang makes manifest the abstract concepts of alienation and connection. “The Chain” is a collection of portraits made in a mental asylum in Taiwan. The life-sized photographs of pairs of patients literally chained together resonate with Chang’s jaundiced look at the less visible bonds of marriage. He has treated marital ties in two books—I do I do I do (2001), a collection of images depicting alienated grooms and brides in Taiwan, and in Double Happiness (2005), a brutal depiction of the business of selling brides in Vietnam.
The ties of family and of culture are also the themes of an ambitious project begun in 1992. For 20 years, Chang has photographed the bifurcated lives of Chinese immigrants in New York’s Chinatown, along with those of their wives and families back home in Fujian. A work in progress, “China Town” was hung at the National Museum of Singapore in 2008 as part of a mid-career survey, “Doubleness.” Chang’s investigation of the ties that bind one person to another draws on his own deeply divided immigrant experience.

7 Days in Myanmar

7 Days in Myanmar is a 276-page pictorial book containing stunning original photographs of Myanmar taken by 30 of the world’s leading photographers, including seven from Magnum Photos: Abbas, Steve McCurry, Bruno Barbey, Raghu Rai, Chien-Chi Chang, Chris Steele-Perkins and John Vink – and represents perhaps the most comprehensive pictorial portrait ever to be created of this once isolated nation.

The photographers travelled throughout Myanmar over a single week in 2013, capturing unforgettable images of Myanmar’s people, landscapes, industries and traditions. Photographs were taken in all corners of the country, from major urban centers and tourist sites to villages in the northern hills and along the southern coast.

The book also includes a DVD documentary film that follows the photographers on their Myanmar itineraries. A website (www.7daysinmyanmar.com) and an interactive application have also been produced. This application is available through Apple’s App Store and free for its users to download.
