« On Holiday with Magnum Photos »
From July 9th to July 13th, take a new kind of holiday in the heart of the summer and join Magnum Photographers Jérôme Sessini, Gueorgui Pinkhassov and Eli Reed for an adventurous 5-day experience that will take your photography to a truly innovative and boundary-breaking level. Magnum Photos is delighted to announce a very special workshop in Antiparos, a small Greek island particularly appreciated for its stunning Cycladic beauty, its white buildings and remote sandy beaches.
One of the central ideas behind
The Antiparos Photo Festival
(4-13 July 2014) was to reinforce this unique island’s cultural identity. Following the success of last year’s event, the second edition of the festival will feature remarkably talented photographers from Greece and abroad. However, the three Magnum photographers, from three different continents, will use this unusual experience to confront their backgrounds and transcend cultural divisions.
Famous for immersing himself in some of the most violent contemporary conflicts, Jérôme Sessini provides a vivid insight into modern wars that is as intimate as it is disturbing. His recent assignment in Ukraine (2014) was particularly appalling and perilous. Jerome will provide support and key insights for photographers in search of a unique artistic signature or striving to express something personal in the timeless context of a Greek summer.
These workshops are made for serious photographers and lovers of photography who are willing to think unconventionally and approach concepts that encompass many disciplines.
With three Magnum Photographers:
as your honorary photographic tour guides, you can be assured that this will be both challenging and exciting. Join us for five days with a small group of like-minded travellers and photograph your voyage of discovery in an unprecedented way.
As part of a special partnership with the British Journal of Photography, the participants will work with each Magnum tutor to identify a deserving workshop participant, who will enjoy a special online feature of their work accompanied by an interview.
Workshop participants should be able to show a good level of photographic aptitude and a desire to learn. Candidates will be expected to arrive fully acquainted with their equipment and ready to photograph. Each workshop is limited to 13 participants and photographers will be selected on the perceived benefit to their career and development.
Photographers should prepare sufficient research relating to what they wish to shoot prior to arrival. A story list will be provided for inspiration; however candidates are expected to formulate realistic projects in the geography and time supplied. Magnum will provide a suitable classroom infrastructure and participants will be responsible for their own time management.
Due to the fast pace of the workshop, Magnum highly recommends that participants produce and edit their work digitally, using their own laptops. Individuals wishing to use film may do so, but at their own cost and during the time imposed. Lab services will be coordinated where required. Please note – all workshops will be conducted in English.
€950 plus VAT (does not include travel, accommodation or on-the-ground expenses).
Upon submitting your online application, you will be transferred to Google Checkout where you must submit a €100 application fee. This will be applied to your tuition fee invoice if you are accepted onto the workshop. The fee will be fully refunded, minus €5 for Paypal services, if you are NOT accepted into the workshop. Applications without a fee will not be processed.
Please note: Magnum Photos reserves the right to cancel groups with less than 8 participants. Students will be given either a full refund or offered a place with an alternative photographer. In the event of a cancellation, students will be given at least 2 weeks advance notice.
Magnum Photos reserves the right to change or alter the programme advertised.
- If a participant decides to cancel for whatever reason, it must be confirmed in writing:
. Magnum Photos will reimburse all the registration costs except for a €100 administrative fee, if the participant informs Magnum Photos of cancellation at least 3 weeks before the first day of the workshop. Beyond this time limit, Magnum Photos will charge the following:
. 50% of the cost if cancelled between 6 and 20 days before the workshop commences.
. 100% of the cost if cancelled less than 5 days before the workshop commences.
. All workshops that are commenced but not completed through the fault of either the contractor/or participant need to be paid in full.
- Magnum Photos is not responsible for reimbursement of travel expenses if a workshop is cancelled. We recommend that you buy refundable air tickets and/or travel insurance.

Participants are expected to make their own arrangements regarding travel and accommodation; a list of suitable accommodation options will be provided to successful candidates.
